Overview

Charter helicopters in the United States fall into three practical classes: light single-engine, light twin-engine, and medium twin. When an operator or broker talks about “a light single” or “an A-Star class ship,” they are describing which of these three brackets the aircraft sits in, and that bracket tells you most of what matters before any specific model is discussed: roughly how many passengers fit, how much luggage really comes along, what the flight is suited for, and where the cost lands relative to the other classes.

What follows is a map of the classes, not a recommendation for your trip: the right aircraft depends on the mission, and the operator picks it against your passengers, your bags, your route, and the day’s weather. Helicopters built for external-load and construction lifting are a separate industry with its own aircraft and are outside charter entirely.

Two things shape the choice before any comparison of cabins begins. Regulation and insurance push certain missions and conditions toward twin-engine aircraft, particularly at night, over water, and over dense cities; the rulebook behind that is in FAR Part 135 for Charter Customers. The Three Charter Classes

Light single-engine

  • Typical seats: 3 to 5 passengers, depending on interior layout.
  • Well-known class examples: Robinson R44 and R66 class, Bell 206 and 407 class, Airbus H125 class.
  • Luggage reality: the binding constraint, more often than the seat count. A light single rated for four passengers rarely carries four adults plus four real bags. Baggage space suits soft bags and small cases, while hard suitcases, golf clubs, and production cases fill it fast. Volume varies enough between models that the only reliable figure is the one for the aircraft being offered.
  • Right tool for: aerial surveys and inspection work, aerial photography, scenic charters with a small party, short hops for one to three passengers, and any mission where cost discipline matters most.
  • Cost framework: the lowest-cost class to charter, all else equal. One engine, a smaller airframe, and lower fuel burn drive that.
  • Where it fails: a light single is the wrong tool for a six-person executive transfer with luggage, no matter how short the leg, because neither the seats nor the baggage space exists. It is also the class most exposed to weather and to the missions where regulation or insurance pushes operators toward twins, such as many night, overwater, or low-visibility operations.

Light twin-engine

  • Typical seats: 4 to 6 passengers.
  • Well-known class examples: Airbus H135 class, Bell 429 class, AW109 class.
  • Luggage reality: better than a light single, but still finite. A full passenger load plus full luggage for everyone is the exception, not the rule, and golf bags or camera cases change the math quickly.
  • Right tool for: executive and corporate transfers, airport and hotel transfers, city-pair travel, and missions where twin-engine redundancy is expected: night flying, overwater legs, and much VIP work.
  • Cost framework: a clear step up from a light single. The second engine, higher fuel burn, and more complex maintenance all feed the hourly cost.
  • Where it fails: a light twin is the wrong tool for a simple, budget-sensitive short hop that a light single can do equally well; you pay for redundancy you may not need. At the other end, a six-passenger party with serious luggage can still outgrow it, which is where the medium twin enters.

Medium twin

  • Typical seats: 6 to 12 passengers, with executive interiors usually at the lower end of that range.
  • Well-known class examples: AW139 class, S-76 class.
  • Luggage reality: the first class where luggage stops being the usual dealbreaker, though a twelve-seat cabin does not mean twelve people’s full baggage; headlining seat counts assume modest bags.
  • Right tool for: VIP and discreet travel, multi-passenger corporate shuttles and roadshows, offshore and overwater work, and any mission where cabin comfort on a longer leg matters.
  • Cost framework: the most expensive of the three classes. Two engines, a large airframe, and frequently a two-pilot crew set the floor. No class above this is typical for passenger charter; anything larger moves into specialized territory.
  • Where it fails: a medium twin is the wrong tool for a two-person hop across town; you would be paying for cabin and capability the trip never uses. It also narrows landing-site options, since a bigger helicopter needs a bigger, more capable pad.

Quick chooser checklist

Work these in order before you talk to an operator:

  • Count passengers at the true maximum, not the hoped-for number.
  • Count bags honestly, including golf clubs, instrument cases, and production gear. If bags outnumber seats, say so up front.
  • Note any night, overwater, or poor-weather exposure on the route; these point toward twins.
  • Decide whether cabin comfort matters for the leg length, or whether the flight is purely functional.
  • Treat the result as a class, not a model. Let the operator propose the specific aircraft within it.

Common Questions

Is a twin always the safer choice?

Twins add engine redundancy, and for night, overwater, and low-visibility work that redundancy is valued by regulators, insurers, and passengers alike. Modern turbine singles have strong safety records in the roles they are built for. The honest answer is that class choice is about matching the aircraft to the mission, not about one class being reckless.

Can I request a specific model?

You can ask, and operators will accommodate when the aircraft is available. But quoting and scheduling work by class and mission, so a request phrased as “a light twin for four passengers with bags” gets a faster, more accurate answer than a model name picked from a photo.

Why does the quote step up so sharply when I add passengers?

Do more seats mean more luggage room?

Usually the opposite. Seats and baggage trade against each other within a fixed weight and volume budget, so a maximum-seat layout often assumes minimal bags. State passenger count and luggage separately when you plan.

Does class affect where the helicopter can land?
