What This Charter Is

An aerial photography and film charter puts a helicopter on the call sheet as a camera platform. The aircraft is booked for the shot, not the ride: a production company, photographer, or marketing team takes the whole helicopter, with a pilot who has flown camera work, and builds the day around the shot list rather than a departure time. Production coordinators and directors of photography on film, television, and commercial shoots are the core customers, alongside commercial photographers, creative producers at agencies and brands, real estate marketing teams, and destination marketers. What they share is a brief that calls for altitude on demand: the ability to put a camera at a precise point in the sky, hold it there, move it along a chosen line, and repeat the move until the shot is right. No ground platform offers that combination of position, stability, and speed between setups.

How a Typical Flight Works

The work starts well before engine start. The production builds a shot list, and the operator matches an aircraft and pilot to it. On the day, the crew stages at the departure heliport or FBO, the pilot briefs everyone on safety, and the team flies the shot list in sequence, returning for fuel and resets as needed. A shoot may be one short sortie or a full production day of several.

Two Camera Configurations

The first configuration is doors-off. One or more cabin doors come off, and the photographer works belted or harnessed at the open doorway, shooting handheld or with a lens-mounted stabilizer. It is fast to arrange, needs little lead time, and lets the photographer reframe instantly as the helicopter moves. The limits are human ones: what a person can hold steady, in wind and cold, at practical focal lengths. The heaviest cinema payloads do not fly this way.

The second configuration is an externally mounted, gyro-stabilized camera system, typically a gimbal ball carried on the nose or belly of the aircraft while the operator works from a monitor inside the cabin. These systems hold rock-steady at long focal lengths, carry full cinema camera packages, and repeat moves precisely. The trade-offs are lead time and logistics: the mount must be installed and approved on that specific airframe, fewer aircraft are equipped, and the setup costs more than a photographer in a doorway.

Planning the Shot With the Pilot

The pilot needs to know the shot, not just the location. Every shot type translates into a flight path the pilot actually flies. An orbit is a circle flown at a fixed offset from the subject while the camera stays locked on it, producing the revolving shot. A track is a straight lateral path alongside the subject, producing the tracking shot. A reveal is an approach line that uncovers the subject from behind terrain or buildings. In the pre-flight briefing, the crew walks the shot list with the pilot, agrees on reference points and sun angle, and sequences the takes. In the air, direction flows over the intercom, and a good camera pilot calls out when a requested move would push past what the aircraft or the airspace allows.

Aircraft Typically Used

Light single-engine turbine helicopters dominate camera work. Types such as the Airbus H125 and Bell 407 are the usual platforms: nimble at low altitude, economical to operate by helicopter standards, and widely available with pilots experienced in film flying. Twin-engine helicopters enter the picture when the job calls for them: heavier mounted systems, over-water legs, or productions whose insurers or location rules prefer a twin over congested areas. The operator matches the airframe to the shot list, the payload, and the airspace.

Planning Considerations

Light and Scheduling

Light drives the schedule more than any other factor. Golden hour, roughly the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, gives aerial imagery its depth and warmth, and exact times shift with date and latitude. Sun angle relative to the subject decides which side to shoot and when: a skyline that glows at dawn may sit in its own shadow by mid-morning. Because this is a charter, the day is built around the light window rather than a fixed departure slot, which is one of the format’s core advantages over any scheduled flying.

Weather

Wind matters more for camera work than for transport flying. A stabilized gimbal tolerates some turbulence; a handheld photographer at an open door tolerates far less, and ridges and buildings generate rotors of rough air exactly where shoots happen. Low cloud kills aerial shots outright. Broken cloud can add drama; flat overcast erases the shadows that give aerials their shape. Build weather backup days into the production plan, because some shot windows simply cannot be recovered on the day.

Airspace and Permits

Controlled airspace surrounds most cities and busy airports, and flying a camera pattern inside it requires coordination with air traffic control. Operators who fly film work handle this routinely. Stadiums and major events add another layer: temporary flight restrictions, published through notices to airmen, can prohibit flight near venues while an event is running, and their exact size and duration are published per event rather than fixed. Minimum safe altitude rules differ over congested and non-congested areas, and filming that needs to go lower or closer than those rules allow means additional FAA coordination or a waiver, which the operator arranges and which takes time. Responsibility usually splits cleanly: the operator handles airspace and ATC, while the production or location team handles property owner permissions and local filming permissions. Production-Day Logistics

Weight is the silent constraint. Camera bodies, lenses, gimbal packages, monitors, and the people who run them all trade against fuel, and every occupied seat is a choice. On the ground, the heliport or FBO becomes the staging area: batteries charge, media offloads, and lens changes happen on the ramp rather than in a hover. Expect multiple sorties with fuel stops between them, and expect turnaround discipline to decide how much of the light window gets used. Call time works backward from the light, not from crew convenience.

Lead Time

Lead time follows configuration. A doors-off shoot on a light single can often be arranged on relatively short notice. A mounted gimbal job takes longer: mount availability, installation and approval on the airframe, and any airspace coordination all add days or weeks. Costs follow a framework, not a rate card. The drivers are aircraft class, flight time including positioning to and from the location, crew day length, camera mount rental and installation, standby time between sorties, any coordination or permission work, and weather backup days. When a Helicopter Is the Wrong Answer

A helicopter is not always the answer. For shots below a few hundred feet, short moves in tight urban spaces, or quick social-media content, a drone is usually cheaper, quieter, and faster to deploy, and pretending otherwise would waste your budget. For long, straight, high tracks over open country, a fixed-wing aircraft covers ground faster for less. For low, repeatable moves over a small area, ground-based cranes, cable cams, and vehicle mounts do the job without an airframe at all. And when the moment is immovable, a live event at a fixed time under marginal weather, no aircraft can guarantee the shot, so the honest plan includes a ground or drone backup.
