Katmai
Four Million Acres and Not One Road
Katmai occupies the neck of the Alaska Peninsula, southwest of Anchorage, where the land narrows between Bristol Bay and the Gulf of Alaska. It has two things almost nowhere else has together. At the western end, salmon rivers draining into a chain of large lakes, and around them a brown bear population the Park Service puts at about 2,200 animals, with coastal densities among the highest anywhere on the planet. At the eastern end, a line of active volcanoes and a valley floored deep in their ash.
That valley came from one event. The Park Service dates the eruption to June 6 to 8, 1912, when 3.1 cubic miles of magma came out of the ground at Novarupta, thirty times the volume of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, throwing ash above 100,000 feet. What it left is the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes: a pale, level plain where a green river valley used to be, now being cut into gorges by the rivers crossing it.
Between the two ends there is no road. The Park Service says the park is almost exclusively accessed by plane or boat, and visitors and supplies alike arrive by aircraft or hull.
What a Flight Actually Reaches
The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Flat, grey and empty at ground level, and legible only from above, where the braided channels and the depth they have cut through the ash show what has happened since 1912.
The volcanic line. Novarupta’s lava dome, the collapsed caldera of Mount Katmai with a lake standing in it, and the cones running along the Aleutian arc.
The Brooks River and the lake system. A short river between two large lakes, with the tundra and braided channels of the Bristol Bay side beyond.
The Pacific coast. Hallo Bay, Kukak Bay, Geographic Harbor and the bays between them, backed by sedge meadows and mudflats and fronted by the Shelikof Strait, with Kodiak Island beyond.
The crossing itself. The peninsula is narrow here, so one leg takes you from tundra and lake country over the divide to salt water.
The Subject Is on the Ground
Most aerial markets sell the view. This one does not.
A bear on a salmon stream is a ground subject. It rewards standing still at a sensible distance for hours, which is what the viewing platforms and guided coastal walks exist for, and an aircraft has no business loitering low over animals. The Valley works the same way: the aerial view explains it, and the walk across it is the experience.
So the aircraft here is transport, and what it buys is ground: a place to stand, in a park with no road to any of it. That is a real product and a different one from Scenic & Sightseeing Charters.
Floatplanes Land in the Park. Helicopters Do Not.
This is the fact that shapes every charter decision here, and it is a regulation rather than a habit.
Fixed-wing aircraft on floats land on lakes, rivers and beaches throughout Katmai, which is how Brooks Camp and most of the backcountry are reached. Helicopters may not. Under 43 CFR 36.11(f), using a helicopter in an Alaska park area anywhere other than at a designated landing area, under the terms of a permit or a memorandum of understanding, is prohibited, with emergency and search and rescue work excepted.
The plain consequence: if your trip is Brooks Camp, or a drop-off at a lake inside the park, buy the floatplane. It is the right vehicle, the cheaper one, and the rule is on its side.
Where the helicopter earns the work is transit, and ground beyond the park. The coastal bays a flight crosses sit inside the boundary, so the rule above governs a landing in any of them, although the Park Service notes that the beaches below mean high tide do not belong to the park. The bears are not confined to it either, and the same source counts more of them than people on the Alaska Peninsula as a whole. On ground outside Katmai, a machine needing neither open water nor a strip can put down on a beach ridge, a gravel bar or a bluff above a meadow. Tide matters too: the Park Service warns visitors to coastal areas to check tide tables to see whether a floatplane can get close enough to shore. A helicopter does not ask that question. Where Flights Operate From
King Salmon is the working front door. The Park Service puts park headquarters there, about 290 air miles southwest of Anchorage, with air taxis serving the park from Anchorage, Homer, Kenai, Kodiak, Dillingham and King Salmon itself. The common routing is a commercial flight into King Salmon, then a smaller aircraft there.
The field is larger than the town suggests: the main runway runs 8,901 feet, a legacy of the air force station that shares it, and the FAA diagram still marks a military area on the north side. Homer and Kodiak are the practical alternatives for the Pacific coast, both closer to that side of the peninsula.

Typical Routes and Flight Times
The coast run. Out from Homer or Kodiak across the water to the bays on the Pacific side, the day spent on the ground with the aircraft waiting.
The valley overflight. King Salmon out to the ash plain and the volcanoes behind it, and back over the lakes.
The peninsula crossing. Bristol Bay side to salt water in one leg, which is the shape of most working flights here.
The support sortie. People, instruments or supplies to a site with no lake, beach or strip.
What Hiring the Whole Aircraft Changes
You buy time on the ground, not time in the air. The whole point of the aircraft here is to leave it. A private departure can sit on a beach all day and lift when the light goes.
You are not tied to water or tide. The alternatives need a lake, a river or a beach the tide allows, and that constraint sets other people’s timetables.

What Stops a Flight Here
The peninsula is low and narrow, with the Bering Sea side on one hand and the Gulf of Alaska on the other, and the two do not agree. Fog off Bristol Bay, wind through the passes and cloud spilling over the divide are all normal, and often on the same day. Katmai’s reputation for weather days is earned.
Two things follow. Build slack into the plan, because a fixed return the same evening turns a marginal forecast into a cancelled trip. And expect the aircraft to be the part of the trip that moves, which is the subject of Weather, Delays & Scheduling.
Seasonal Patterns
The season is short and the calendar is set by fish. Early summer brings bears onto the coastal sedge meadows and tide flats before the runs arrive. Midsummer puts sockeye into the rivers and bears onto them, and brings the most reliable flying weather of the year. Late summer moves the activity to other streams and brings the first storms in off the Gulf, with the clearest cold air between them. Winter is short on daylight, worse on weather, and almost nobody visits.
