Two Volcanoes, Fifty Miles Apart
Southwest Washington carries two Cascade volcanoes within sight of each other. Mount Rainier stands over the Puget lowland, glaciated from the summit down, the thing every horizon here is measured against. Mount St. Helens sits about fifty air miles south of it and is the shorter of the two by a long way, because on the morning of 18 May 1980 its summit and north flank slid off. What is left is a broken cone opening north into a horseshoe crater with a lava dome standing on the floor.
Fifty miles is nothing in the air and a great deal on the ground. There is no direct route between them: the country is ridge, river valley and forest road, and the through routes run west to Interstate 5 and back east again.
What a Flight Actually Reaches
The inside of the crater. The volcano erupted on until 1986, piling lava on lava, and the Forest Service records the dome that grew out of it as now 920 feet high. From the ground you see the crater mouth. From the air you see the floor, the dome, and the glacier grown in the shadow behind it.
The blast zone, as one shape. In less than three minutes that morning, 230 square miles of forest lay flattened. From a road that is a hillside of fallen trunks. From altitude it is one fan combed outward from a single point, the timber still lying in parallel lines across ridge after ridge, and the raft of bleached trunks still drifting on the lake the avalanche dammed and raised.
Rainier all the way round. Roads reach a few sides of the mountain. A circuit reaches every side, including the Carbon and the Emmons glaciers, a long walk from any pavement and the bulk of the ice the Park Service counts on this peak.
Two Mountains, Two Rulebooks
Mount Rainier is a national park, and the flying over it is governed accordingly: the Park Service and the FAA finalised a plan in 2022 authorising a single commercial air tour a year.
Mount St. Helens is not a national park. Congress created the 110,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in 1982, and it is Forest Service ground inside the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The Park Service is plain that the National Parks Air Tour Management Act, the law that produced Rainier’s plan, does not apply to public lands managed by agencies other than the National Park Service.
That is narrower than it sounds. It is not permission to fly low over a monument. It means the regime that closes Rainier does not govern the southern mountain, where the ordinary Part 135 operating rules and the operator’s own operations specifications do. Ask about those before a route is built on them.
The Road to the Best Viewpoint Has Been Out Since 2023
Johnston Ridge looks straight into the crater from the north, and has been unreachable since 2023. Shortly after 9 p.m. on 14 May that year a slide put more than 300,000 cubic yards of debris across SR 504 near milepost 49 and destroyed the 85-foot Spirit Lake Outlet Bridge. Replacement work was scheduled to start on 27 April 2026 and is expected to finish in autumn 2026, with Forest Service restoration at the observatory to follow.
Both halves matter. While the road is out, the northern approach to the crater is an aerial matter for anyone unwilling to walk in, and the road is coming back, so that argument has a shelf life measured in months. Glacier National Park is the opposite case: there the flying has the end date.
The Fields Are Small, and Only One Has Jet Fuel
Southwest Washington Regional at Kelso is public, sits 20 feet above sea level, works one 4,391 by 100 foot runway, has no tower and no landing fee, is attended 0800 to 1700, lists no heliport, and carries both 100LL and Jet A. It is about 35 air miles west of the crater and this market’s southern base.
The northern half is worse served. Pierce County Thun Field, five miles south of Puyallup, is public, works one 3,651 by 60 foot runway, has no tower, is attended 0800 to 1400, lists no heliport, and carries 100LL only. It is roughly 30 air miles from Rainier’s summit, and a turbine helicopter cannot buy a drop of fuel there. Ed Carlson Memorial Field at Toledo, out on the Interstate 5 corridor, is the same story.
So the fuel arithmetic runs back to the larger fields around the Sound, and a day out of Seattle is often simpler than one from the field nearest the mountain. The FAA charts an airport diagram for neither, which is most of what you need to know about their scale.
Sixteen Registered Pads, and the Nearest Is a Fire Base
Within fifty miles of the country between the mountains the FAA record holds sixteen registered heliports, none open to the public: eight corporate or private, seven hospital or medevac, and one wildland fire helibase, the nearest of them to Rainier and emphatically not for visitors. A flight here starts and finishes at an airport, or on private ground whose owner has agreed in advance, which makes who controls the ground the first question on any itinerary that does not end on pavement.
Typical Routes and Flight Times
Kelso and the crater. Roughly 70 air miles out and back, under an hour of flying, and the one route here reaching what no road currently does.
The Rainier circuit. Thirty to forty air miles from the northwestern fields, then a full turn around the mountain, which no road offers in any season.
Both volcanoes in one flight. Fifty miles apart in a straight line, so one aircraft holds the pair inside a morning against most of a day on the road.
What Hiring the Whole Aircraft Changes
Two mountains on one booking. A shared sightseeing seat flies one loop from one field. A whole aircraft takes the crater in the morning light and turns around Rainier on the way home.
The route is settled in the briefing. Time bought by the hour can sit over one drainage while a camera works, the trade What a Charter Costs sets out.
A weather window can be waited for. A booked seat departs or it does not, while an aircraft you are holding can wait an hour for the mountain to clear. Bags and camera gear are then a payload question the class of machine settles.
Seasonal Patterns
July to September is the settled season, the least cloud of the year and the only dependable window for a high circuit of Rainier.
The mountains make their own weather. A peak this size builds cloud on itself while the valleys stay clear, so a lowland forecast says little about the summit.
Late summer brings smoke. Wildfire across the Cascades routinely lays haze through August and September, which costs visibility rather than ceiling.
Autumn and winter are ceiling problems. The overcast sits low on the west side for weeks. Rain alone rarely stops a flight: ceiling and visibility do.
Where the Ground Wins
Paradise and the south side of Rainier. The park is open all year, and winter vehicle access runs from the Nisqually Entrance on the way to Paradise. That road puts an ordinary car high on the mountain, and no flight substitutes for standing in the meadows under it.
The lava tubes. What draws people to the mountain’s south side is underground, and an aircraft is no use at all for it.
The recovery. The story people come north for is biological and happens at ankle height: the seedlings, the gophers, the survivors under a snowbank. A walk, not an overflight, and in a grey week the aircraft sees only what the road sees.
Which Charter Types Dominate Here
Transfers from the metropolitan fields into the mountain valleys and back, the largest share of the flying and the least visible.
Whole-aircraft scenic work, sold as the monument and the blast zone rather than as a low pass over a national park, and planned as a scenic and sightseeing charter.
Utility, survey and camera work. Forestry, powerline, fire and instrument flying, plus the aerial photography two much-photographed mountains generate.
