One Cut Through the Whole Range

The Cascade Range runs unbroken from British Columbia to northern California, and one river crosses it without climbing. The Forest Service describes the result as a river canyon 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep, and the only sea level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. The working length is about sixty air miles, from the field at Troutdale on Portland’s eastern edge to the one above The Dalles.

Everything follows from that shape. The gorge is a corridor rather than a basin: an interstate, a railway on each bank, a barge channel and a historic scenic highway share the one slot, and so does the weather.

What a Flight Actually Reaches

The climate line, drawn in forty miles. The Forest Service records rainfall on the gorge’s west side running between 30 and over 100 inches a year, and falling from over 100 inches to under 10 within 40 miles as conifer gives way to oak and pine and finally to grass-steppe near The Dalles. From a car it is a slow change over a morning. From altitude it is a line you cross, dark forest behind you and bare gold country ahead.

The waterfall wall as one object. The road meets the west-end falls one car park at a time. Held off the wall at a distance, they read as a single feature: one basalt bench, one row of hanging valleys, cut by the same water.

The Wind Is Not an Occasional Problem, It Is the Local Climate

A sea-level gap between wet marine air and a dry interior behaves like a pressure valve, and the National Weather Service treats the gorge accordingly. Its Portland office does not issue Wind Advisories for the Columbia River Gorge zones at all, and sets the High Wind Warning bar there, as in the high Cascades, at sustained winds of 50 mph or frequent gusts of 75 mph, against 40 and 58 mph for the rest of its area.

The FAA record makes the same point at ground level. Of Cascade Locks State, the field in the narrowest part of the canyon, it says that terrain drops off rapidly to the west and crosswinds can produce extreme low level turbulence and unexpected wind currents.

Elsewhere the question is cloud and what a low ceiling does to a booking. Here the sky can be clear and the day still unflyable.

Four Fields, One Tower, and No Fuel in the Middle

Portland-Troutdale works one 5,399 by 150 foot runway, keeps a control tower and an attendant from 0700 to 2200, carries both 100LL and Jet A, and charges a landing fee to commercial aircraft and to anything over 10,000 pounds. Ten miles east of Portland, at the gorge’s western doorway, it is where most days here begin.

Sixty miles east, Columbia Gorge Regional at The Dalles works runways of 5,097 and 4,647 feet, has no control tower, is attended 0800 to 1700, and carries 100LL and Jet A. It also carries a published helicopter instrument approach, which is unusual at a field of its size.

Between the two ends the picture thins fast. Ken Jernstedt Airfield at Hood River works 3,040 by 75 feet, has no tower, is attended 0800 to 1800 from May to October and 0800 to 1700 the rest of the year, and carries 100LL only, so a turbine helicopter cannot buy fuel there. Cascade Locks State, the one field in the scenic heart of the canyon, is unattended, has no tower, carries no fuel at all, and works 1,800 feet of 30-foot-wide pavement.

Turbine fuel therefore sits at the two ends of the gorge and nowhere in between, so range planning runs back to Troutdale or The Dalles whatever the day does in the middle, which is one input into the class of machine a route can use.

Six Registered Pads, and Three of Them Are Hospitals

Within fifty miles of the gorge’s midpoint the FAA record holds six registered heliports, none open to the public: three medical pads, at White Salmon, Hood River and The Dalles, and three private sites well outside the canyon. They sit on the Oregon page of the Heliport Atlas and its Washington counterpart. A flight here starts and finishes at an airport, or on ground whose owner has agreed in advance, which makes who controls the ground the first question on any plan that does not end on pavement.

You Cannot Land Where the Scenery Is

At the named viewpoints, landing is not a matter of negotiation.

A standing Forest Service order for the Scenic Area prohibits the landing of aircraft, and the dropping or picking up of any material, supplies or person by aircraft including a helicopter, at its developed recreation sites, naming among others Multnomah Falls, Wahkeena Falls, Horsetail Falls, Eagle Creek, Cape Horn and Coyote Wall. That is the list of places a visitor actually wants to stand.

The cliffs above them are closed by regulation rather than by order. The Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness covers the Gorge Face itself, from Oneonta Creek west to Viento Creek, and landing an aircraft is prohibited in a National Forest Wilderness. Across the river the rule is a state one: Washington provides that no aircraft shall land or take off in a state park area not specifically designated for it, with exceptions for emergency and agency work, which covers Beacon Rock State Park.

None of that restricts flying the canyon, only stepping out into it, which settles the shape of the day before anyone asks: the aircraft is a moving window, not a way to reach a waterfall on foot.

Typical Routes and Flight Times

Troutdale to Cascade Locks and back. About 27 air miles each way, covering the waterfall wall, Beacon Rock and the Bridge of the Gods inside an hour of flying.

End to end. About 60 air miles from Troutdale to The Dalles, roughly half an hour in a light single, against a drive on the one interstate everything else is also using.

What Hiring the Whole Aircraft Changes

The route bends to the weather, not the schedule. A shared seat flies one fixed loop or it cancels. An aircraft held by the hour takes the west end in the morning calm and turns home before the afternoon westerly builds.

Time over one feature. An aircraft bought by the hour can hold station off a single cliff while a camera works, the trade What a Charter Costs sets out, and the reason the scenic flying here is sold as a whole-aircraft scenic charter.

Seasonal Patterns

Summer is the settled season and the windy one. The marine push comes up the gorge from the west and strengthens through the afternoon, so mornings fly better than afternoons, more reliably here than anywhere else.

Winter runs the gap the other way. When high pressure builds over the interior the gradient reverses and the wind comes down the canyon from the east, cold and often hard. It is also the season the falls carry the most water, so the best-looking months are the worst-flying ones.

Where the Ground Wins

The waterfalls, plainly. Multnomah Falls drops 620 feet and takes more than two million visitors a year, and the walk from the car park to its base takes a few minutes. The Forest Service runs a summer permit for that car park precisely because so many people manage it, and no aircraft improves on it.

The historic highway. The Historic Columbia River Highway was built through the waterfall corridor a century ago as a scenic road and nothing else, and most of it is open again to cars, walkers and cyclists. It was laid out for the view a sightseeing flight is sold on.

The gorge has the best roadside scenery of any market on this list, and a helicopter earns its place on what the road cannot do: the full length in half an hour, and the wall seen as one wall.

Which Charter Types Dominate Here

Transfers along the corridor and out of it, between the Portland fields, the gorge towns and the orchard country beyond. This is the largest and least visible share of the flying.

Whole-aircraft scenic work, planned as a route rather than a loop. Utility, survey and camera work. Powerline, wind, fire and forestry flying follow the same corridor, and a canyon photographed this heavily keeps aerial photography busy.
