Three Thousand Square Miles With One Loop Road Through It
Yellowstone sits on a volcanic plateau where Wyoming, Montana and Idaho meet. The park runs to 3,472 square miles, 96 per cent of it in Wyoming, rising from 5,282 feet to 11,358 at Eagle Peak, with 392 miles of paved road inside the boundary. Those roads run as a figure of eight through the middle. Everything else is walked or is not reached.
The market is the ring around that plateau: West Yellowstone and Gardiner at the Montana entrances, Cooke City at the end of the northeast road, Cody east across the Absaroka Range, Jackson south past the Tetons, with Bozeman, Billings and Idaho Falls further out where the airline service is. On a map they look like neighbours. On the ground the plateau is between them, and any two are a half day apart the long way round, sometimes over a closed pass.
The argument here is a transport argument before a scenic one. Jackson Hole sells the view from the valley floor. Yellowstone sells the fact that its own front doors are a day apart.
What a Flight Actually Reaches
The Beartooth Plateau. Northeast of the park, a block of alpine tundra above 10,000 feet pocked with small lakes and crossed by one highway that is shut most of the year. From above it reads as a single cold tableland.
The Absaroka wall. The volcanic range along the eastern boundary, roadless for most of its length, and the reason Cody and Gardiner are not neighbours. North of it the Yellowstone River leaves the park through Paradise Valley, a wide ranch corridor held between two ranges.
The shape of the plateau. From a transit altitude the caldera resolves as one collapsed dome, its thermal basins marked out by steam in cold air. It is the only view that makes the geology legible at once.
No Air Tour Plan Covers the Park
Most park markets negotiate with a rulebook written for them. This one is defined by its absence. The National Parks Air Tour Management Act requires an operator wanting to fly commercial air tours over a national park to apply to the FAA for authority, and the parks that have been through that process hold either an air tour management plan or a voluntary agreement setting routes, altitudes and an annual count. Great Smoky Mountains has one. Yellowstone appears on neither list.
Setting down is settled as plainly. Park Service regulation prohibits delivering or retrieving a person or an object by helicopter on park land other than at a designated location, and there is none here for a visitor. Denali sells the glacier landing as its product. Nothing of the kind exists here.
What remains is a flight bought to move people, governed like any other charter by the Part 135 rules. A route between two fields may cross park airspace at a cruising height, and the FAA asks pilots to stay well above noise-sensitive ground, so the park passes underneath rather than alongside.
The Fields Around the Rim
Bozeman Yellowstone International is open to the public, sits at 4,473 feet, works a main runway of 8,994 by 150 feet with three shorter ones beside it, keeps a tower staffed from 0530 to 0030, and lists no heliport. It is the region’s airline gateway and business aviation centre, and most charter days begin or connect there.

The field closest to the park is the odd one. Yellowstone Airport at West Yellowstone belongs to the State of Montana, sits at 6,649 feet a mile from the west entrance, works one runway of 8,400 by 150 feet, has no control tower, and is closed from 31 October to 1 May. For half the year the nearest field to the busiest entrance is not there. Yellowstone Regional at Cody covers the east side at just over 5,100 feet, Jackson Hole the south, Billings and Idaho Falls the far corners.
Away from the airports the landing picture is the thinnest of any market here. Inside seventy-five miles of the park’s centre the FAA record holds seven registered heliports, not one open to the public, the nearest sixty miles out at Big Sky; West Yellowstone and Gardiner register none at all, and what exists either side of the plateau is mapped on the Wyoming and Montana pages of the Heliport Atlas. The rest is ranch meadow and lodge lawn, which makes who controls the ground the first question of any itinerary that does not end on pavement.
Thin Air Decides the Payload
Field elevations run from 4,473 feet to 6,649, and the plateau between them sits higher than either. On a hot afternoon the density altitude at West Yellowstone is above 9,000 feet before the aircraft crosses anything, so lift falls away and seats, bags and fuel compete for one margin. Typical Routes and Flight Times
Bozeman to the west side. Roughly seventy-five air miles down the Gallatin, well under an hour, against a canyon road shared with everyone heading in.
Bozeman or Livingston to Cody. About 135 air miles across the top of the park, against a road more than twice that around it. The leg this market exists for.
Cody to West Yellowstone. Around a hundred air miles. The road runs through the park, costs most of a summer day, and does not exist between November and April.
The rim circuit. The Beartooths, the Absarokas and Paradise Valley as whole-aircraft scenic and sightseeing charter, any crossing of the park itself flown at a transit height.
What Hiring the Whole Aircraft Changes
There is no shared seat to compare it against. Elsewhere a whole aircraft buys freedom from a fixed loop. Here it is the only way this country is seen at all.
Two gateways become one day. Cody in the morning and the Gallatin in the afternoon is one flying itinerary and a two-day drive.
You can carry the season. With the park roads shut and the west-side field closed, an aircraft still connects the towns: an airport transfer over hard ground.

Seasonal Patterns
Summer is the working season and the crowded one. Every field open, and afternoon build-ups over the plateau that make morning the dependable air.
Autumn is the best flying of the year, clear behind the first cold fronts, the light low all day. It ends abruptly, with the west-side field closing on 31 October.
Winter closes the ground and leaves the air. Only the road from the North Entrance at Gardiner through to Cooke City is generally open to regular vehicles, the rest of the park given over to oversnow travel through midwinter. The Beartooth Highway is shut and West Yellowstone has no field, so a flight is one of the few ways across this country that still works.
Spring is a staged reopening, the west entrance in mid April and the high segments not until late May. Through both shoulder seasons the plan is a ceiling and visibility decision made on the day.
Where the Road and the Boardwalk Win
The basins and the wildlife valleys. Grand Prismatic, the Upper Geyser Basin, the terraces at Mammoth, dawn in Lamar with a scope. None of it improves from the air.
Anything inside the boundary. No landing, no low pass, no tour. If the trip is the Grand Loop, an aircraft adds nothing to it.
A settled forecast. Roads open and weather fine, Bozeman to the west entrance is two pleasant hours by car.
Which Charter Types Dominate Here
Arrival and transfer legs, Bozeman, Billings, Jackson or Idaho Falls into the gateway towns, ranches and lodges. The largest share of the flying, and the least visible.
Scenic work outside the boundary, sold as the Beartooths and the Absarokas rather than as a flight over the park.
